Kevin Matheson, violin

🇺🇸 USA

Violinist Kevin Matheson was awarded first prize in the 2021 Charleston International Music Competition for his performance of Vieuxtemps’ “Souvenirs d’Amérique.”

He founded the Classic Strings Duo with his violist brother and received critical acclaim at their Carnegie Weill Recital Hall début as part of the Ibla Grand Prize competition winners’ tour. The duo has been recognized for its mesmerizing and spirited performances - two perfect virtuosos, playing as one. Their two successful tours to Japan included recorded performances at Yamaha Hall in Tokyo.

Matheson has performed Max Bruch’s Double Concerto and Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante as soloist with the Valley Chamber Orchestra at Hollins University and Vivaldi’s Four Violin Concerto with the Irish Sinfonietta Orchestra in New York City. For the past 14 years he has directed and been a frequent performer for two successful chamber music series in Southwest Virginia.

He has organized new ballet choreography for his performances of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Piazzolla’s Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, selections from Bartok’s 44 Duos for Two Violins and other works with the Roanoke Ballet Theatre and Southwest Virginia Ballet.

He has commissioned new chamber compositions, premiered additional works and recorded five CDs. As an arranger, he has adapted many Broadway, movie, operatic and orchestral works for his Rainier Trio (violin-viola-piano) and the Classic Strings Duo which both tour for the Virginia Commission for the Arts. The Matheson brothers are Performing Artists for Young Audiences of Virginia, presenting school concerts throughout the state.
